LISD - Stay Safe

Dear LISD Parents and Guardians,

This letter will serve to remind you of the COVID protocols that we have used so far this year, and we want to make you aware of some additional mitigating strategies that we are adding to our efforts, starting this-coming Tuesday, September 7^th. 

On behalf of the LISD Board of Trustees and administration, thank you for everything you are doing to support your child and our school district.  This has been a very trying time for our schools and community and I am proud of the way our citizens are supporting, encouraging, and helping one another make it through this.

Our administrative team is so appreciative of the work done by the folks in our medical community, including LISD Nurse, Kim Hurst, who has been an incredible resource and a tireless leader through all of this.  Our team has done its best to navigate through all the many difficult judgement calls and critical decision points along the way.

As you know, across our nation, there is a long list of mitigation strategies that the state and federal governments are recommending, and in other cases, mandating. School administrators follow the mandates, and with guidance and support from school trustees, carefully consider the recommendations.

A parent recently stopped in and visited with me to discuss all of this, and in discussing protocols, he shared a clever analogy.  He compared each protocol to a slice of Swiss cheese.  He said that each slice has holes, and that the only way you can greatly increase the likelihood of cheese in every bite of your sandwich is to stack several slices.  I thought that was pretty good, but his illustration also made me hungry.

The list of COVID efforts and protocols that we have been stacking so far this year includes:

• Routine cleaning and disinfecting (this is done primarily nightly)
• On-site testing
• Contact tracing
• On-site vaccinations for students and staff who want them
• Optional mask wearing
• COVID counter on LISD website (updated every Monday)
• Hand sanitizer available throughout all campuses
• Quarantine students and staff who have a positive COVID test

Starting this-coming Tuesday, we want to add a few slices to our stack.

• We are changing our wording and stance on mask wearing from “optional” to “highly recommended” …..still optional, but now highly recommended.
• We strongly encourage social distancing and mask wearing for spectators at athletic contests.
• Covering water fountains and providing water filling stations on all campuses
• Social distance in classroom
• We will quarantine students who are determined to be a close contact of a COVID positive family member.
• Limit visitors to campuses during the regular school day (principal discretion)
• Health Center of Southeast Texas reopens the School Based Health Clinic at LES - additional information on the website and sent to parents next Tuesday

Estimados Padres y Tutores de LISD:

Esta carta servirá para recordarles los protocolos COVID que hemos utilizado en lo que va del año, y queremos informarles sobre algunas estrategias de mitigación adicionales que estamos sumando a nuestros esfuerzos, a partir del próximo, Martes, 7 De Septiembre.

En nombre de la Junta Directiva y la administración de LISD, gracias por todo lo que están haciendo para apoyar a su hijo y a nuestro distrito escolar. Este ha sido un tiempo muy difícil para nuestras escuelas ,y comunidad, y estoy orgulloso de la forma en que nuestros ciudadanos se apoyan, se animan y se ayudan unos a otros a superar esto.

Nuestro equipo administrativo está muy agradecido por el trabajo realizado por la gente de nuestra comunidad médica, incluyendo a la enfermera de LISD, Kim Hurst, quien ha sido un recurso increíble y una líder incansable a través de todo esto. Nuestro equipo ha hecho todo lo posible para navegar a través de las muchas decisiones difíciles, y los puntos de decisión críticos a lo largo del camino.

Como saben, en toda la nación existe una larga lista de estrategias de mitigación que los gobiernos estatales y federales recomiendan y, en otros casos, imponen. Los administradores escolares siguen los mandatos y, con la orientación y el apoyo de la Junta Directiva, consideran cuidadosamente las recomendaciones.

Recientemente, un padre me visitó para discutir todo esto, y al discutir los protocolos, compartió una analogía inteligente. Comparó cada protocolo con una rebanada de queso Suizo. Dijo que cada rebanada tiene agujeros, y que la única forma en que pueda aumentar en gran medida la probabilidad de queso en cada bocado de su sándwich es apilar varias rebanadas. Pensé que era bastante bueno, pero su ilustración también me dio hambre.

La lista de esfuerzos y protocolos de COVID que hemos estado acumulando en lo que va del año incluye:

• Limpieza y desinfección de rutina (esto se realiza principalmente por la noche)

• Pruebas de COVID echas en las escuelas

• Seguimiento de contactos

• Clinica de vacunas para los estudiantes y el personal que las deseen

• Uso de cubre bocas opcional

• Contador de COVID en el sitio web de LISD (actualizado todos los lunes)

• Desinfectante de manos disponible en todas las escuelas

• Poner en cuarentena a los estudiantes y al personal que tengan una prueba COVID positiva

A partir de este próximo Martes, queremos agregar algunas rebanadas a nuestra pila.

• Estamos cambiando nuestra redacción y postura sobre el uso de cubre bocas de “opcional” a “altamente recomendado”…..todavía es opcional, pero ahora es altamente recomendado.

• Recomendamos altamente el distanciamiento social y el uso de cubre bocas para los espectadores en las competencias atléticas.

• Cubriendo fuentes de agua y proporcionando estaciones para llenar botellas de agua en todas las escuelas

• Distancia social en todas las clases

• Pondremos en cuarentena a los estudiantes que se determine que son un contacto cercano de un miembro de la familia que sea positivo a COVID.

• Limitar los visitantes a las escuelas durante el día escolar regular (a discreción del director)

• Health Center of Southeast Texas reabrera la Clínica de Salud Escolar en LES - información adicional en el sitio web y enviada a los padres el próximo martes

As we face the recent increase in COVID-19 cases, we appreciate your understanding and support as we work together to get through this difficult time. I want to assure you that there are many people who have been working behind the scenes to make this year's return to school as safe as possible.  An incredible amount of time and energy have been given by our staff to provide a rich learning experience in a safe environment. The responsibility we feel to protect our students is one that Liberty ISD takes seriously. As such, we are strongly encouraging our staff and students to wear masks. Please know that we, along with you, look forward to the days when our lives are back to normal...both in and out of school.
